Gay Toronto - The Church St & Wellesley Gay Village is home to the largest gay pride in Canada - Toronto Gay Pride. Hundreds of thousands of people come out for this event which happens the last week in June.
The large gay pride parade starts on Church St and runs up and then south on Yonge St.
The Church St. area is home to many gay restaurants & night clubs and is the place to party in a totally open gay environment. Street signs show the have the gay rainbow incorporated on them.
The 519 Church St community centre also known as the "519" is hosts many social & political groups. The AIDS Memorial located in Cawthra Park is also in the Church Wellesley location. Church St also offers coffee shops, clothing stores, books and you can find gay magazines in just about every doorway or entrance. The area has offered more residential over the past few years with new condo complexes popping up.
Outside of the gay village, there are may gay friendly places that are popular to live. The Beaches is a trendy area with lots of restaurants and cafes and shopping. Real estate is priced in the Beaches with condos to large homes that run from 500k up. The boardwalk is a great place for walking or jogging to keep fit.
Cabbagetown which lies east of the gay village offers Victorian homes along tree lined streets. It is walking distance to Church - Wellesley but with a slightly quieter atmosphere. The homes have manicured lawns & gardens, iron fencing and architecture from the late 1800's that have been preserved for their beauty. Parliament St is filled with restaurants and many unique shops. Pope Joans is a popular bar for the ladies on Parliament St. Also available is the Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre at 454 Parliament and the Cabbagetown Fall Festival which runs in Sept.
East of the Don Valley Parkway and south of the Danforth lies the Riverdale - Leslieville neighbourhood. This has become an established gay friendly area over the years and is not as pricey but still close to the heart of gay Toronto.
There is always a buzz on the Danforth with Greek restaurants, health stores and shopping and south on Queen St , you can find gay operated businesses that range from cafes to art galleries, clothing shops and restaurants.
